mark tangs challenge part 2

I know i may be potentially hypocritical when i speak out against clubbing, but it has become one of the areas in my life to change (radically as mark might add) after being in School of Witness. DISCLAIMER THIS IS MOSTLY RANTING

Melvyn Foo offers some stunning revelation against clubbing: "guys go there to touch girls. girls go there to be touched by guys. everyone drinks to relief themselves of their inhibitions."

People like to justify their clubbing deeds by the intentions they have and the company they keep. I want to explain why this can never qualify.

"I only go with my guy/girl friends and we dance and drink with each other just for fun. I dont have the intention of trying to pick a chick up or to dance with some stranger"

My friend offered me this when talking about clubbing. Surely with such good intentions, its okay to just have a bit of fun once in a while? After all, with friends of the same gender, what could possibly go wrong. The answer lies, of course, in temptation.

The main purpose of going is to enjoy the company of friends and dancing as a socially cohesive activity. Intention is more or less certified as Good. But what's to say that your mind won't be wandering on every girl in a skanky dress / short skirt that squeezes past you, especially if you are partially inebriated. I wont tell you how your mind wanders, you very well know.

You may try to maintain your intentions in your actions, but you CANNOT maintain them in your mind or idaresay soul, which are where they originate in the first place. Because if i were to offer a scenario that an insanely HOT guy/girl wants to dance with you and show you a good time, the very fact that you have to think about this question makes your intention ultimately fallible.

An analogy is a couple that is going to get married in the future, and decide to co-habitate with their partner before marriage. Even though the intentions of love are so great, one cannot deny the GREATER power of temptation. "they are deeply in love, staying together only helps them to strengthen their love, they have plans to be tgt anw in the future..." But such close proximity can lead you down a path fuelled by LUST, easily mistaken for as Love. Its a slippery slope. Start with living together, then decide to sleep in the same room, then join the beds, then sex results.

I guess for me the big question is why leave the door wide open to the devil while attempting have good intentions? Or are your intentions secretly to leave the door open, masquerading your desires as a good intention, but with all the intention to make it bad?

Anyway, there is a reason why the club is so dark, and consequently so crowded. Light is generally associated with Good, and the absence of it Bad. Dark promotes promiscuity without the chance of being caught. Dark allows you to remain anonymous to the person you just danced with. Why? You have no intention of getting to know that person, she's just serving a function, she is an object to your need. But imagine if you knew her as a person, her history, likes-dislikes, emotions, feelings. You knew that she just broke up or has low self-esteem. Would you still want to rub yourself all over her?

Anyway, i didn't mean to, but i ranted. But im exercising my prose fingers also la, haha.

I just wanted to say clubbing consists of a lot of compromise on our values, even if we want to try to cling on to our good intentions to justify our ends.

Here's praying that we'll never go back again
